The Massachusetts State House is an unmistakable federal-style building with a glittering gilded dome that sits on top of Beacon Hill in Boston. Charles Bulfinch, who is also responsible for Boston’s Faneuil Hall expansion and the original Massachusetts General Hospital, designed it. It was completed with a wood dome in 1798, but the dome needed to be covered in copper within a few years, due to leaking. The telltale gold was added in 1874 and redone in 1997. Additions were designed by Charles Brigham and Sturgis, Chapman & Andrews.
