With three games left in the season, the Yankees are locked in a tie with the Orioles, who are in Tampa this week. If the Yankees and Orioles finish tied in the AL East, they’ll play each other in a one-game playoff. The winner will advance to the ALDS, and the loser will have to play the following day in the wild-card one-game playoff, the winner of which will make the ALDS and the loser of which will go home for the winter.
Obviously, both the Yankees and Orioles would prefer to avoid any one-game playoff. That’s where the Red Sox come in.
